Shannon 2014 News

February 4 marked the 39th anniversary of the founding of Shannon Boat Company by Walt Schulz right here in Bristol, RI. The constants here at Shannon for almost four decades have been uncompromising bullet-proof quality, unsurpassed custom-to-order craftsmanship, unparalleled owner service and constant product improvement. Nothing shows the continuous positive change in new Shannon models designed by Walt Schulz better than the three new Shannons that headed heading south from Narragansett Bay this past fall. The first Shannon Defiance 46’ motor yacht headed to the Bahamas >; the first Shannon 38 HPS sailed to the Gulf coast>; and Shannon 52 RDP #3> had a cold offshore passage from Rhode Island to Oriental, NC. The owners and crews all had exciting voyages that were featured in the latest issue of the Shannon Scroll newsletter. Despite their varied locations, all three boats are available for seatrials. If you would like to arrange an inspection of any of this trio of beautiful Shannons or to receive a copy of the "Shannon Scroll", please send an email to

Currently under production among the many projects at our shop is an interesting variation on the highly successful Shannon 53 HPS. We have received several inquiries from customers wanted to expand the aft lounge deck so Walt Schulz has designed two new options - the Shannon 53/55 HPS and an even larger 57/595 HPS. The lower aft deck has proven to be an absolutely beautiful protected place to sit and lounge in privacy, and by extending this area Walt was able to provide additional seating, a table, two transom doors, and storage. Look at the plans and let us know which one of the three designs (including the original 53 HPS which is still available) you like best.

In other news, we have a fifteen year-old Shannon 39 in for some work after a racing collision (minor damage to the Shannon but the other boat was totaled). While she is with us the owners also decided to upgrade their electronics and undergo basic long-term maintenance. If you are the owner of an older Shannon that needs some attention, let us know if you would like the same expert New England craftsmen who built your boat to do some upgrading.

We have arranged for Shannon visitors a corporate discount at the beautiful Bristol Harbor Inn (401- 254-1444) which is located right on scenic Bristol harbor. Be sure to mention you are visiting Shannon Boat Company when you make your reservation. With all the awarding winning restaurants like the Lobster Pot, Redleffesen’s, Roberto’s, DeWolf Tavern, Quito’s, and Persimmon, and a location only 35 minutes from the airport and train station, Bristol is the classic New England seaport town and has become a tourist destination perfect for a getaway weekend that can include a personal tour of Shannon and a visit to the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Please let Bill Ramos know when would be a good time for you to see our shop and enjoy Bristol. Seatrials are available in season, and with this relentless cold and snowy winter just about everywhere east of the Rockies, we deserve and are hoping for an early warm Spring.

The beautifully sleek look of the new Defiance 46 with extended hardtop
Since we launched hull #1 last winter, the Shannon Defiance 46 has been received by the boating community well beyond our expectations. Walt Schulz’s patented revolutionary SRD hull design gives the Defiance 46 better fuel economy and longer range than comparable sized motor yachts, has more safety features than comparable sized yachts, and the SRD hull shape produces an amazingly stable and comfortable ride with exquisite steering characteristics (even in extreme sea conditions). But many people have written or called asking when there might be a larger version of the Defiance 46 in the future. On the drawing board right now is the latest Defiance design...the Defiance 58, with more luxury and space than the Defiance 46, but is not too big for a husband and wife to handle without a paid crew. In addition, an optional interior plan for those people who have requested not just a real luxury liveaboard but one with full private living quarters for a paid crew will be available as one of the custom interior layout suggestions. The Shannon Defiance 58 promises to be the best liveaboard boat on the market today under 60'.
The 38 HPS is a bold departure from conventional sailboats. With an inside helm and high stability hull, the 38 HPS is extremely fast, ocean ready, and comfortable for long distance passages. The Shannon 38 HPS has 2'6" draft and twin diesels, sloop or scutter rig. Read about the new Shannon 38 HPS>

shannon 58 HPS a larger version of the 53 HPS
In response to customer feedback for more on-deck space on the Shannon 53 HPS, Walt Schulz revisited his original design of the 53/55 HPS. The new Shannon 57/595 HPS has all the positive attributes of the Shannon 53/55 HPS in a slightly larger hull form. The additional space allows for an extended aft lounge lower deck and dinghy storage upper deck. This larger area allows for more outside entertaining including al fresco dining for up to six and the ability to accommodate a cockpit wet bar, fish cleaning station, or life raft storage area. The upper deck space can be used for storage of larger tenders, paddle boards, wind surfers, kayaks, etc. Like the 53/55 HPS, the 57/595 HPS offers a protected inside helm station and raised outside twin wheel cockpit steering station with 360 degree visibility. Similar to all Shannons, the rig setup and deck layout for the new 57/595 HPS were designed to be safely and easily handled by two people in every wind and sea condition, and docking in tight quarters is made especially easy with twin engines and a bow thruster. ....It's all about "Getting There"

On September 28, 2012 Walt and his crew, Luis Couto, Rick Frazier and Tom Sullivan delivered the Shannon 52 RDP from Bristol, Rhode Island to Annapolis, Maryland for the boat show. Despite the good forecast, they ran into heavy weather and rough seas right outside of Newport, but the crew stayed warm and comfortable in the wheelhouse. It's times like these that the inside helm station on the 52 RDP is worth its weight in gold!

Shannon 28MKII Shannon's "Virtually New" program is a concept that takes the word "refit" to a new level.

We take an existing Shannon hull, deck and interior and build a new Shannon MKII from the gelcoat to the smallest detail to create a vessel that is brand new by every definitiion of the word, and for a fraction of the cost of a new Shannon. A 10-year fiberglass hull and deck warranty, a two year new Shannon warranty and a New Vessel Survey Certificate are included. More>

Video: The Shannon Owners' Experience

Knowledgeable, experienced sailors know that foreign builders cannot compete with the excellence and the value offered by a quality American boat builder like Shannon. One of the most important reasons to buy an American built boat is that the same people who built the boat are available in person to deliver the boat to the new owner and to provide technical assistnce in all aspects of operating the new vessel. We have just completed a new DVD of the recent delivery and owner check-out of Shannon 53 HPS. You may watch the video below now, or request your own DVD from Read about the Shannon Owners' Experience more>

The Shannon 53 HPS

On March 31, 2009, we started lofting hull #1 of the new and innovative Shannon 53 HPS. Walt has been listening to your dissatisfaction with the state of the marine industry and has unveiled a hybrid sailboat design that addresses the conundrum of "speed under power versus speed under sail, combined with the comfort of an interior helm". The Shannon 53 HPS is the answer to all the life-long sailors who still want to keep sailing while enjoying speed and comfort and who don't want to be forced into a trawler. more>

Very frequently we have Shannon owners and non-Shannon owners send us pictures of Shannons that they spot all over the globe. We try to put them up on our site or on our Facebook page whenever we can. Below are two videos already on YouTube of the Shannon 53 HPS that you may enjoy. Thanks guys, keep those photos coming!

Here's a beautiful photo taken on April 5 of Greg Souder enjoying an early Spring day on his Shannon 53 HPS, spotted by Marshall Tyler, another Shannon owner who was also on his Shannon. Marshall writes " It is spring in Oriental. Come visit anytime. This afternoon I spotted a very fine Shannon yacht heading north on the ICW at Lowlands, NC just before the Coast Guard station".

We love knowing where our Shannons are all over the world. Thanks Marshall for contributing to Shannon Spotters

Shannon Fractional Ownership

We have initiated a Fractional Ownership Program for select Shannon models. The program calls for a small number of individuals to jointly own a Shannon, with an experienced yacht management company knowledgeable in international logistics to operate the boat in conjunction with Shannon. The boat will be moved with the seasons to select locations worldwide by a professional captain with crew, with the owners having the option to go on these offshore passages. On arrival each owner (with the option of bareboat or crewed) will have a set number of weeks to use the boat. The management company will handle all the scheduling, and Shannon will be involved with all maintenance and service. At the end of ownership period, the boat will be sold, and with the historically high resale values of Shannons, the fractional owners should get all their original costs back. The three new Shannon models – the Shannon 52 Global, Shannon 53 HPS, and Shannon 52 RDP – are especially well suited for this program, as are any of the other Shannon models. If you have interest in this fractional ownership program, please contact Bill Ramos cell 401 639 9075 or email

We'll be updating our Facebook page Shannon Boat Company regularly with new photos and events here at Shannon. Our owners' album is filling up with gorgeous photographs received from Shannon passagemakers around the globe. We are proud to be building yachts that take our owners safely and comfortably to all the distant places they want to go. Check it out>
