The Shannon 47/52 is intended to be the perfect boat for a couple to sail and live aboard anywhere in the world, while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. The 47/52 is manageable underway by one person, but offers accommodations for as many as nine. The Shannon 47 provides excellent offshore sailing performance, with good speed in even light air on all points of sail and exceptional seaworthiness. The cockpit is the best among mid-size cruisers, with ample room in the cockpit including 6' 7" long seats, giving both a place to lie down and good access to a deep sail locker on the port side of the cockpit. Excellent forward visibility makes the 47/52 a pleasure to sail or dock.

The design goal for the Shannon 47/52 was to create a medium displacement boat that would accommodate the strongest construction standards in the industry, provide the necessary water and fuel capacities, and create an environment in which people could sail safely, comfortably, and quickly no matter how long or short the passage. The 47/52 has a length/displacement ratio of 227, and a sail area/displacement ratio of 17.5. The consensus of yacht designers is that boats with these mid-range figures are the best suited for long distance passage making. The safest ocean voyage is always the swiftest as long as the boat provides security and comfort even in extreme conditions.

The Shannon 47/52 features a reverse sheer transom. a departure from a classic transom design, which addresses important safety and comfort issues. Trying to manhandle a life raft weighing over 100 pounds stored on the cabin top when abandoning ship compounds a nightmare scenario. The primary function of the Shannon 47/52 transom design is to create secure and accessible storage for a life raft canister. Deploying the raft does not require any lifting since it is launched from doors in the transom. In addition, this approach provides simplicity and safety when swimming, boarding a dinghy, or in an emergency man overboard situation via a drop down swim ladder built into the transom doors
"The Shannon 47's design, constructionand philosophy are uniquely aligned;the boat is forward-thinking in concept, yet rooted in the unwavering tradition of
sailing far and wide."
