The Shannon 42' SRD is, in my opinion, the next logical step up from the Shannon 38' SRD. We launched the prototype 38 SRD in 2003 and I personally ran the boat with my family throughout New England and Florida including the Keys, putting over two thousand miles on the boat. The SRD concept (Schulz Reverse Deadrise) was the culmination of over seven years of CAD design work to come up with a power boat hull that was very fuel efficient, shoal draft and exceptionally seaworthy. Also, I was not happy with the pounding and jerking motion of conventional modified deep V planning hulls, including the planning hulls I had designed over the years. The SRD goals turned out to be much more difficult than I ever expected. However, the 38 SRD received rave reviews from the boating press that sea trialed the boat in every possible wind and sea condition with only a pair of twin 180 HP engines pushing the boat at 20 knots. I was able to obtain a U.S. Patent for the unique hull design after several years of effort.
Naturally after spending so much time on the 38 SRD I realized that there were “livability” issues that I would like to address. The new 42' SRD focuses on about 50 pages of notes that I took while running the 38'. I wanted to expand the wheelhouse so the area could be totally enclosed for heat, air conditioning and mosquitoes without a big production of snapping drop curtains. Also, I wanted to provide more space so five or six people could be comfortable in the wheelhouse while the boat was underway or at the dock. At the same time, I did not want to affect the outside cockpit seating and eating area that we found so delightful on the 38. I also put more flare in the hull sections at the bow to keep spray off the windshield.
Down below I felt that a queen-sized island double berth was needed on the 42' with entry from either side and more room for dressing and locker space. I also incorporated a second full sized sleeping cabin for guests that was totally private. The guest cabin can have over/under bunks or a double berth. The toilet room with separate shower stall was also expanded. I left space for a “breakfast nook” below which I put in 38 SRD #2 and found to be very useful. I modified the galley area to accommodate a bigger refrigerator and more food storage space. Like all Shannons, the 42 SRD is available with a wide range of custom interior layouts, machinery and engines.
While the SRD hull design is considered revolutionary, the 42' SRD design is definitely evolutionary based on personal experience on the 38' footer.
